Syracuse Public Works Leaving Electronics to the Consumer

July 27th, 2009

Because of a new $30 fee that is being enacted on the city by OCRRA, Syracuse public works will no longer pick up home electronics like televisions and laptops for disposal. There will be a $10 charge to recycle those items, along with computer monitors, at OCRRA's transfer centers. The fees are to offset the cost of recycling the items as well as to bring in money for the agency. These fees have also brought about more questions, like that of illegal dumping.

“Certainly that's a possibility,” says Kristen Lawton, a spokeswoman for OCRRA. “We're hoping that people do think about the future. Think about upcoming generations and the environment. It will [happen]. I wish that wasn't the case but it is, unfortunately, a reality.”

There are still several free options for recycling your home electronics, including at OCRRA's centers until September 1st and stores like Best Buy.
