Salvation Army Sends Kids to Camp

July 20, 2009--Seventy-eight inner city Syracuse kids boarded two school buses this morning to attend Long Point Camp on Seneca Lake.

The Salvation Army of the Syracuse Area sponsored the children, whose parents would otherwise not be able to afford a vacation.

Despite the recession, the Salvation Army still has sufficient funding to pay for the camp. "People are still giving," Marketing and Events Manager for the Salvation Army Lynn Hy says. "We're getting maybe more donations in smaller amounts, then what we usually have."

The parents pay for the kids to go to camp on a sliding scale, if they are able to pay. The Salvation Army fully funds the children who cannot afford to pay anything.

While the camp is open to all children in Onondaga County ages 6 to 12, a lot of the kids are from the Salvation Army's housing projects and after school program. The application process begins in April each year.

The camp goes through July 24th.
