Aviation Camp Expands to All year-round Program

Aviation Camp

The City of Syracuse Recreation Department in conjunction with the Aviation Department at the Syracuse Hancock International Airport is expanding it's Aviation Summer Camp this year.

For the last six years, about 20 kids are participating in Aviation Camp each July at the Syracuse Hancock International Airport. Aviation camp exposes kids to control towers, airport maintenance, airplanes, and airport tours; the every day ins and outs in the aviation industry

Recreation Commissioner, Patrick Driscoll plans to reconstruct the program by opening it up to ten community centers around Syracuse so that more kids are given the opportunity to go and explore the airport and learn about careers in aviation all year around.

The proposed camp change is beneficial for kids who regularly wouldn't have received the chance to participate in the camp during the summer due to registration fees and lack of transportation. Opening the camp up to Community centers allows youth to make trips to the airport more frequently.

Driscoll says it's not just a field trip but an education learning experience that makes the camp more effective for kids in their future careers."Kids are looking to make a career decision at some point, and make decisions on what they would like to study going forward, these are some of the things that we have to continue to offer."

Starting this August, the Aviation camp will be turning into the "Aviation Experience" all year around.
