SYRACUSE -- While Democratic Mayoral candidate Joe Nicoletti continues to try and narrow the gap between himself and Democratic designee Stephanie Miner, he's also trying to distance himself from one of his biggest supporters.

When Common Council President and withdrawn mayoral candidate Bea Gonzalez endorsed Nicoletti for the mayoral position, she was quoted in the Post-Standard as saying that Miner "sometimes misses the mark" on dignity and respect for others. She was also quoted remarking that she didn't "like to feel belittled," something she associated with Miner.

At a news conference today at Syracuse University, Nicoletti refused to associate himself with those remarks.

"She speaks for herself, okay?" Nicoletti said. "And she has her opinion to speak for herself."

Despite the attacks, Nicoletti repeated his pride in having Gonzalez among his roster of endorsements.

"I am honoured to have her support," he quickly added. "She's been a spokesperson for people in this community that've been traditionally left out."

Nicoletti has already lost the Democratic designation to Miner, who garnered more than 50 percentage points more than the two-time former candidate in the May vote, which was decided by the Onondaga County Democratic Committee. But Nicoletti repeated his belief that "talking to the voters" could still deliver him a primary victory in the leadup to the general election in November.
