Syracuse Youth Farm Stand Opens Today

August 4th, 2009
By: Kristen Tripodi

The Syracuse Youth Farm Stand, Urban Delights, opened today for the first time this summer at the Downtown Farmers Market. Area teenagers, ages 14 through 18 prepare for the opening for two weeks.

Raseida Mays, program coordinator, says during the two week orientation program the teenagers are taught business and entrepreneurial skills. She teaches them how to work as a team, importance of good credit, and customer service skills. After orientation, the teenagers run the Farm Stand for two weeks during the summer; which sells fruits and vegetables.

The program has been in operation for about ten years. Mays says the program has grown popular among city teenagers, so popular that for the past few summers, they've had to turn teens away because so many applied. The program is a good learning experience for the teens and Mays says she hopes that one day the skills they learn here will help them open their own businesses if they so choose.

The Urban Delights will be open for business at the Market Tuesday through Friday, until August 14th.
