Oswego Mourns the Loss of One of Its Own

Nesbitt Founded Marine Museum

By Jeff Landset
OSWEGO, N.Y.-- Rosemary Nesbitt started Oswego's H. Lee White Marine Museum in 1983. She worked as its executive director until she retired in January 2008, one day after its 25th anniversary. And now, a year and a half later, the city will celebrate her life tomorrow at St. Mary of the Assumption Church.

"This is a loss, it is a loss for me, it is a loss for the whole community," says Mercedes Niess, the museum's current director.

Niess spoke of how Nesbitt always expected the most out of people, and credited her for making her a better worker and a better director.

First Female Head of Oswego's Board of Directors

Nesbitt graduated from Syracuse University in 1947 and received her master's degree from the university in 1952. She wrote several children's plays and books and was one of the first women on the Port of Oswego Authority's board of directors including its first female chairperson, heading the board for ten years.

"Tomorrow there's not gonna be a dry eye at St. Mary's Church," said Niess.
