SYRACUSE, N.Y.- A major road reconstruction project in Syracuse has the green light. The Common Council has voted to start phase one of the Hiawatha Boulevard Reconstruction Project. Councilman Michael Heagarty said the project has been on hold for a long time because they wanted to wait until the expansion of Carousel Center was further along, since the traffic from construction vehicles would have quickly undone any improvements that had been made. But now Phase one is set to kick off in what could be a matter of weeks. He says the project is a big one.

After engineering studies and logistical planning are completed, the construction gets under way. It will likely entail at least the following:

  • extracting of road top surface
  • re-lay of road bed
  • re-engineer of drainage system
  • changes in traffic pattern

Heagarty says they will likely break ground before the summer. He says it would be ideal to finish all or most of the work before major snowfalls hit.
