Lantern Launch in Syracuse to Commemorate Hiroshima and Nagasaki

Aug. 5, 2009

The Peace Council is sponsoring a Lantern Launch tonight to honor the atomic bombings at Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Everson Plaza downtown.

Lantern Decorations

The lanterns will be decorated by children who have drawings and writings about what peace means to them. At the end of the service, the lanterns will be placed in a pool by Everson Plaza and candles in the lanterns will be lit.

Religion and Peace

The service will have speakers sharing passages and giving reflections from various religious backgrounds, including:
- Protestant
- Catholic
- Jewish
- Pagan
- Muslim
- Baha'i

Peace and Politics

While many of the activities in the Lantern Launch are similar to previous years, the politics of the event this year are much different.

“I think that the main difference is that there’s a little bit more sense of hope in the world,” Carol Baum, staff member for the Peace council said. “We now have a president who has made some statements against nuclear weapons and wanting to really cooperate in the world to get rid of them, whereas before we had a president who was prepared to use them.”

Baum says that the event includes petitioning to pressure the president to get rid of nuclear weapons.
