Syracuse, N.Y. - The U.S. Postal Service may shut down the Elmwood Post Office on Syracuse's southside in order to save money for the agency. Last year's high gas prices and patrons new loyalty to email has impacted the post office.

With nearly 700 potential offices up for closure or consolidation the Elmwood and North Syracuse offices are under scrutiny.

The post office is facing a $7 billion dollar loss this year despite the agency's efforts.

Local reactions

Patron Louis White says the community still needs the Elmwood office. "It would affect the whole community pretty well cause a lot of people come down here and use this post office, they really depend on it," said White.

Since many patrons such as the elderly walk to the Elmwood location, closing the office would place many locals without service.

Patron Bianca Coleman feels it wouldn't be right. "I'd like for them to keep it, why keep moving everything we got, you know there's not much over here, but leave the post office!" said Coleman.

No changes are expected before Sept. 30th.
