The first-ever Syracuse Redneck Games take place in Lakeland this Saturday. Rednecks and Hillbillies are coming out of the woodwork to compete in the Games. Katie Rapp is the market activities coordinator and she says they are getting more competitors than originally expected, “We've close to 50 (competitors), a little over 50, and they're coming in every single day...and you know, couldn't be happier, it's a ton more than we were expecting, but it's fantastic.”

She says competitors are coming from many different areas and states, “We're getting entries from Buffalo, Rochester, Canandaigua... Connecticut.”

Inspiration

While the name Syracuse Redneck Games is original, the games are not. The first games were held at the original Quaker Steak and Lube location in Sharon, Pennsylvania. The games in Pennsylvania were known as the Sharon Olympics, but in Syracuse it will be known as the more direct Syracuse Redneck Games.

Games

There are several different events at the Redneck Games, the list includes:
• The Hub Cap Hurl
• Bobbing for Pigs Feet
• The Git R’ Done Long Jump Contest
• Seed Spitting
• Dumpster Diving
• Big Hair Contest/Best Mullet Contest
• Toilet Seat Toss
• Live Big Buck Hunter Contest
• Hot Wing Eating Contest
• Beer Belly Wet T-Shirt Contest
• Corn-holing (Beanbag) Tournament

Fun for All

While the Games are advertised for Rednecks and Hillbillies, Rapp assures they will be fun for all, “It’s not just for country folk, it’s for everybody, it’s a good time, it’s funny to watch.” It is free to register and to attend the Games and they are scheduled to start at 3:30 on Saturday at the Quaker Steak and Lube near the State Fair Grounds in Lakeland.
