Despite a recent reprieve, local yoga instructor Judiann Cesta is worried that the state will impose new regulations that could put her out of business.
In April the State Education Department sent letters to yoga schools around the state that teach future instructors. The department asked that such schools obtain the proper teaching license, much like trade schools or business training facilities, or face up to $50,000 in fines. The request was delayed last week after the department faced pressure from a coalition of yoga teachers.
"Basically [the state] wants a part of the pie," said Cesta, who operates East Street Yoga in Skaneateles. "The money."
Cesta was relieved by the department's recent announcement to delay the decision, but is still worried about the cost of eventually having to comply.
"It could possibly be about $3,000 a year from what I looked on [the website]," Cesta said. "I might be able to sneak in one more training for the fall. And that will be that."
